  1. Prior to Augustine everyone believed in Pelagianism. There was no doctrine in the church that we don’t have free will or are born sinful or tainted. Augustine created that. Or rather Augustine brought it in from GNOSTICISM. Augustine was a Gnostic — a Manichean — from age 17 to 26. When he ‘returned’ to the church at 26 he didn’t entirely leave the ideas he heard in Gnosticism behind. Pelagius was defending orthodoxy as it had always been. Augustine was innovating. But Augustine is the one who came out declared by the political church to be the orthodox one! This shows that what is considered orthodoxy changes. The Catholic church DOES NOT stay the same; its doctrine changes. What it once considered orthodox it later considers heresy. And perhaps it also works the other way around sometimes too!

    • St. Augustine was a true son of the Church. All the others were Gnostic. Don’t think because a majority of people held a heresy that it was true, look at todays time with the crisis in the church. St. Anthanasius was another who was part of the minority of truth. Narrow is the path that leads to heaven, wide is the path that leads to hell.

      • Surely you aren’t saying Pelagius was a Gnostic? That would be absurd. Just do this for me: Find one church father before Augustine who teaches predestination. Find one church father before Augustine who teaches that we have no free will. Just like the ignorant Protestants, you apparently think Augustine was the first church father, or perhaps the only one! The dude lived in 380! He is not the closest to the time of the apostles by any means. Justin Martyr is the closest, and he defends free-will. Quit reading your Calvinist propaganda and go read the church fathers! Not Augustine and those who came after him tainted by his false-doctrine but those BEFORE him.
